Who We Are and What We Do

  • In addition to our non-licensed members our present EMS staff consists of Maine licensed Paramedics; Advanced EMT’s (Intermediates), Emergency Medical Technicians and Firefighter/Drivers.
  • IN 2014 we answered 230+ calls for assistance.
  • We assist the other island’s EMS Services: SWH/Tremont Ambulance, Bar Harbor Fire, Acadia National Park, and Cranberry Island Rescue.
  • As highly trained technicians, we complete stringent initial and continuing Maine State EMS training, licensing, and yearly education requirements.
  • We are volunteer, pay-per-call EMT’s and FF/Drivers. We are in immediate contact with our Dispatch via modern two-way radio and pager systems. Along with our island’s mutual-aid EMS partners, we provide 24/7 emergency medical service coverage to our residents and guests.
  • Our state-of-the-art ambulances are housed in and respond to calls out of the Mt. Desert Municipal Fire Station in Northeast Harbor.
  • In June 2008, we added our 2nd. Advanced Life Support level ambulance.
  • IN 2011 we acquired state-of-the-art Physio Control LP-15 Defibrillator/Monitors for both ambulances.
  • In May 2013 we took delivery a new 2013 PL CUSTOM AMBULANCE replacing our 2002 model.
  • Community Services include blood pressure & health screenings, school & community presentations, CPR/FA & health and safety classes, American Red Cross blood drives, and Mt. Desert Fire Department assistance.
  • In 2014, Jim Wilmerding became certified as a Community Paramedic
  • In 2012 Crew Chief Margaret Houghton and EMT Gibson McCullagh joined our ranks as  Paramedics (now 4 EMT-P’s living in NEH village.
  • Each August we sponsor a recognized 5-mile road race and family fun walk and fund raising raffle attracting talented runners from all over New England.
  • We are a private, incorporated, not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization governed by an elected Board of Directors.
  • Our membership is open to all interested individuals whether or not they hold EMS licensing.
